You are a woman, you are menopausal and you suffer from mild symptoms like nervousness, fatigue, dry skin, tendency to weight gain, etc.. and if it was a hypothyroid ?

Hypothyroidism is frequent in women over 50 years ...

Hypothyroidism , which results from low production of hormones by the thyroid gland does not touch that postmenopausal women, but we note that the disorder is more common in this population, particularly with regardhypothyroidism called primary . Indeed, there are two forms:
  • Hypothyroidism is a primary deficiency in thyroid hormones resulting from a malfunction of the thyroid gland ,
  • hypothyroidism secondary station is linked to impairment of the pituitary or hypothalamus, brain structures that control the thyroid .

What are the typical symptoms of hypothyroidism?

Overall, in cases of hypothyroidism , organ function slows down (conversely, it accelerates in the event of hyperthyroidism ):
  • fatigue,
  • Lack of enthusiasm and weariness,
  • slow intellectual
  • nervousness,
  • skin cold and dry,
  • hair and brittle nails,
  • hair loss,
  • weight gain (moderate) despite a lack of appetite,
  • hoarseness,
  • cramps and muscle stiffness,
  • constipation,
  • irritability.
But often the symptoms are not marked because they appear very gradually, and then it is the complications that put on the track, slow heartbeat, mental depression, hallucinations, memory problems, gallstones, anemia, etc.. Note that hypothyroidism (or hyperthyroidism ) can also be manifested by the presence of a goiter , lump in the neck indicating a malfunction of the thyroid gland . Anyway, this track should be explored at the slightest suspicion.
The doctor conducts a palpation of the thyroid gland , but a dosage hormone from a blood test that will indicate the operating status of the thyroid . In some cases, an ultrasound scan or cervical thyroid is requested to check the structure and condition of the gland .

How to treat hypothyroidism?

The treatment involves the prescription of hormone replacement therapy (thyroid hormone synthesis) at doses and gradually increasing over several weeks, sometimes months or even for life. in all cases, regular monitoring is needed to detect any overdose or under dose.
