GAMMA GT, WHAT IS IT?

The gamma-GT (gamma glutamyl transpeptidase) are enzymes naturally present in the liver, kidneys, pancreas. Arate of abnormally high gamma GT may be a problem with these organs, such as hepatitis or biliary obstruction. But an excess of gamma-GT may also indicate an alcohol chronically.

Gamma GT are enzymes whose rate increases when the liver is attacked

The GGT is an enzyme present in many organs (liver, kidney, intestine, pancreas?). They are involved in the metabolism of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.
Their assay blood is normally less than 35 IU / l or more precisely between 7 and 40 IU / L in males and 7-28 IU / l in women.
But some diseases are increasing their rates. This is the case of hepatitis, whether viral, bacterial or toxic poisoning caused by drug or alcohol. Other conditions associated with increased gamma-GT : cholestasis (bile duct obstruction), kidney failure, heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, pancreatitis, liver cancer, pancreatic and breast cancer, cirrhosis, melanoma, hyperthyroidism, obesity, diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, certain medications (sleeping pills, anti-diabetics, oral contraceptives, antihypertensives, anti-depressants, anti-cancer?), etc..

Chronic alcoholism also raises the gamma GT

There is another situation that leads to increased gamma-GT : the alcoholism. Please note, GGT does not increase overnight. Thus, an acute intoxication (alcohol intake point) does not play on the rate of gamma-GT. Only a chronic intoxication (daily) over several weeks (3 weeks to one month) results in increased levels of gamma GT.
In the case of a re-Alcohol, increased gamma GT is faster, in 1-2 weeks. In contrast, the rate returns to normal fairly quickly after weaning in 48 hours.
Thus, this assay is used as a marker of intoxication chronic alcoholic. One can, for example, with this assay, whether a person remained abstinent over the long term. However, this assay does not indicate the amount of alcohol consumed on each occasion.
Finally, note that 5% of cases, no explanation for the increase in GGT is found?
