WHY DOES ONE MEASURE THE GAMMA-GT?

The GGT (gamma glutamyl transpeptidase) are enzymes present in particular the liver. They are classically assayed in a liver because any elevation of GGT reflects inflammation or impairment of the liver. What are the situations that weaken the liver and require a determination of Gamma-GT ?

GGT and liver

The liver is based on the assay in blood of various enzymes and other substances manufactured or processed by the liver : transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, but also fibrinogen, 5'nuclĂ©otidase, ammonia, cholesterol, etc.. and last but not least the gamma-GT.
These assays are needed to diagnose bladder dysfunction or liver, but also to monitor any disease involving the liver, like hepatitis for example, or to evaluate the impact of alcohol on the liver.

What are the situations responsible for an increase of GGT?

Affections of the liver caused by infection (viral hepatitis ...).
Toxic liver diseases (alcohol, drugs ...).
Traumatic stress disorders.
Autoimmune diseases.
Cancer of the liver...
Alcoholism.
Some other diseases cause increased GGT :
Diabetes.
Heart failure.
Myocardial infarction.
Hyperthyroidism.
Overweight.
Finally, some people normally have a rate of GGT level. This includes about 2 to 3% of the population.

Gamma-GT and drugs

Regarding medications, be aware that some may interfere with the assay of GGT. This is the case of anti-inflammatory drugs, antipyretics, antidepressants, hypnotics, antiepileptic drugs, contraceptives, estrogen-based, etc.. During the assay, it is important to indicate that the treatment is followed.

Indicators

The normal level of GGT is between 8 and 35 IU / l.
The Gamma-GT increased from consumption alcohol daily for 3 weeks. They fall after 48 hours of withdrawal. In case of resumption ofAlcohol, the GGT re-grow faster after 1-2 weeks.
