HYPERTENSION: LOSE WEIGHT, YES BUT HOW?

Over 7 million French people suffer from hypertension . We know that being overweight is a contributory factor. However, how many pounds should I lose to effectively lower their blood pressure ?

Hypertension and cardiovascular risk

The number of French people suffering from hypertension is particularly high.It is estimated at 7 million, including about 30% are unaware of and therefore are not treated.
Even if the hypertension is not always diagnosed, the French are the biggest consumers of anti-hypertensives.
Indeed, this condition must be supported because it increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, like other well-known risk factors: obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol. And more are aggregated risk factors, the higher the cardiovascular risk increases.

What weight loss may be aimed to lower blood pressure?

To return to the relationship between hypertension and obesity, remember that overweight increases the risk of hypertension , a condition that directly increases cardiovascular risk.
It is therefore natural to ask how weight loss influences blood pressure. But also, how much weight should I lose interest for a decrease in blood pressure? If weight loss is part of the treatment of hypertension , what purpose can reasonably be aimed?

This issue was explored in a study (Framingham) on more than 1,000 overweight subjects (/ 49/IMC * / * / greater than 25). Four years later, subjects were classified into four groups according to the importance of weight loss (less than 2 kg in 4 years between 2 and 4 kg between 4 and 7 kg over 7 kg) .
The researchers found that as people who lose more than 7 kg see their risk of high blood pressure decreasing from 21 to 29%. This decrease is 28% among middle-aged (30-49 years), but reached 37% among older people. This reduction in risk of hypertension is maintained when the weight loss is sustainable over time.

In conclusion, even a small weight loss is beneficial for reducing the risk of hypertension . This decrease is weight in this study of 7 kg or more, in people suffering from obesity.

Note that weight loss should be stable over time. No way to chain plans to turn everything into a very significant weight loss. For this purpose, the practice of regular physical activity, even moderate, is a great help.
