CONIZATION IN PREVENTING CANCER OF THE CERVIX UTERI

The cone biopsy is the removal of a piece of cloth shaped cone at the base of the cervix . This procedure will confirm the exact type of abnormality of the cervix uterus and its scope (biopsy). But the cone biopsy is often therapeutic and prevents the progression to cervical cancer .

What conization? What is conization?

A cone biopsy is usually performed when abnormalities of the cervix called dysplasia exist. These atypical cells detected during a pelvic examination by smear. Without treatment, these lesions may develop. Depending on their nature, precancerous, cancerous or otherwise, they can cause repeated infections, irregular bleeding between periods, or a true cancer of the cervix uteri . The conization then determines the exact nature of atypical cells ofthe cervix and extent. It is also used as a surgical procedure that is to say, it allows the complete removal of precancerous tissue and prevents the progression to cervical cancer .

Conization: an act of surgery

The cone biopsy is a procedure that is performed under regional anesthesia such as epidural, or sometimes under general anesthesia. It is by natural means and uses the conventional scalpel, laser or cryotherapy. The cone biopsy does not cause post-operative pain, however it is recommended to resume daily activities after about two days. Vaginal bleeding will occur for about a week. But if they become too abundant, we must consult quickly. It is advisable to wait for post-operative visit (two weeks or one month) before resuming sexual activity.Condom use is recommended during the first month to avoid any risk of infection. This procedure is common and involves little risk. In the short term, the main risk is bleeding and needs to quickly check. Therefore the surgeon often leaves in place a wick in the vagina.

Conization and desire for pregnancy

In the longer term difficulties are likely to be pregnant. Indeed, the cone biopsy may alter the cervical mucus and make it unfavorable for sperm penetration. In case of desire for pregnancy , it should then start treatment to improve the quality of mucus (estrogens). If this procedure preserves the possibility of pregnancy Later, however, it may increase the risk of preterm delivery. The pregnancy should be further monitored.
