It is desirable to have at least three meals and two snacks a day and follow a fair distribution of nutrient intake between meals.
Many of us tend to leave in the morning by taking only coffee, which is an example of what not to do. Breakfast should provide at least 20% of daily energy intake. Conversely, it is desirable to reduce lunch and especially dinner, which is too often the only real meal of the day. The ideal distribution would be:
- 20 to 25% at breakfast
- 30 to 35% at lunch
- 10 to 15% in the afternoon
- 30 to 35% at night.
This balance is based on a quantitative calorie daily average, to adapt according to gender, age, weight, size and activity of the person.

Place of nutrients in the total calorie intake:
| Protein | Lipids | Carbohydrates | |
| Observed distribution | 12-15% | 38 to 42% | 43 to 50% |
