COSMETIC SURGERY AND SUICIDE RISK

The relationship may seem surprising but it is real and very strong. A Canadian study, the death rate from suicide is greater than 73% among women who received surgery for a breast prosthesis.

The risks of cosmetic surgery

Hitherto been suspected rather plastic surgery , sometimes increase the risk of cancer, sometimes increase the risk of immune disease. Silicone implants have also been talking about them, especially in terms of leakage.
To verify the safety of these surgical procedures referred to aesthetics , a team of Canadian researchers compared the mortality rate among women who received cosmetic surgery as compared to a control group (women of similar age in the labor general).

Death rates and causes were examined in two populations:
24,500 women who received a breast implant to increase the size of their breasts, between 1974 and 1989;
16,000 women who received cosmetic surgery other than breast prosthesis during the same period.

After a follow-up of 15 years, the overall mortality rate is not higher in these two populations compared to the control group. It is even much lower than 26% among women with a breast prosthesis and 32% in others.
This phenomenon is probably due to the fact that women undergoing surgery are more healthy. In fact, aesthetic surgery is realized only among healthy women. Moreover, they generally have a low socio-economic level.

Many more suicides after cosmetic surgery

However, the death rate from suicide is 73% higher in women operated for breast prosthesis compared with the control group and 55% higher among women who received another type of cosmetic surgery .

Clearly, women candidates for cosmetic surgery have an increased psychological fragility.

This finding reinforces the idea that women who want to resort to cosmetic surgery must be carefully considered beforehand, both physically and psychologically. It is important to explore the reasons mentioned pushing for intervention design , but also analyze, for example, the degree of self-confidence, self esteem, etc.. In addition, a fairly long period of reflection must be respected. One can also wonder what proportion of these women have benefited more from a psychological rather than surgery?
