SILICONE BREAST IMPLANTS: THE THREAT OF DISRUPTION

After washing of any suspicion of risk of cancer and autoimmune diseases, the breast implant silicone were again permitted in France. Remains today the risk of rupture of the bag . It has to be reevaluated.

The rupture of the pocket, vulnerable to the loss of the silicone, which in some cases can trigger siliconomas represents a hazard to the use of silicone breast implants. That risk still remains poorly evaluated. Results from a Danish study help to fill that void. Without being alarmist, they urge caution .

The only way to properly assess this risk is monitored annually by MRI. Patients who received implants at least three years ago has placed an initial MRI . At that time, 317 prostheses were still intact. Two years later, 280 of them were in place, among which, 33 ruptures proved (10%) and 23 possible (7%) were identified. Thus, some 5.3 ruptures are likely to occur for 100 implants each year . The age of the implant was indeed the most important predictive factor: the risk is multiplied by three for 6-7 years prostheses compared with implants of 3 to 5 years .
The authors note, however, the progress of manufacturing . Indeed, those with double envelope is minimal risk compared to others. Thus, the absence of failure for most modern implants posed three years ago would be about 98% at five years and 85% at 10 years.

In conclusion, between the third and tenth year after implantation, 15% of prostheses are likely to break . In addition to surgeons that advertise a life of 10 years, better follow the recommendations of the French Agency for Safety of Health Products (AFSSAPS) to conduct a sustained and careful monitoring with one every five years minimum .
