SUNSCREENS: THE LABELING IS WEAK ...

The creams do not prevent skin cancer . They are effective against sunburn and should in no way be used to increase the exposure time. To facilitate consumer choice, the French Agency for Safety of Health Products (AFSSAPS) has made recommendations to harmonize the labeling of sunscreen products .

These recommendations are intended to harmonize the labeling of sunscreen products and to clarify the methods of determining protection factors .They should contribute to the development of European guidelines by the end of 2006.

A product for sun protection must meet two requirements: "to have coefficients of UVB and UVA protection and adapted in proportion to the subject of regular application, made without forgetting protected area and in sufficient quantity." Four levels of protection have been defined , depending on skin type and type of exposure, but not until the end of the year before we see these harmonized indices for all manufacturers of solar products:
  • Low protection: SPF of between 6 and 14
  • Average Protection: SPF between 15 and 29
  • High protection: SPF between 30 and 59
  • Very high protection: SPF from 60

A learning ...

According to some studies, recommendations for use of sunscreen products are not generally observed (body surfaces frequently forgotten, application deadlines and unfulfilled insufficient). In addition, many people still believe that a high index of cream keeps longer in the sun. Not true! And attention, application of sunscreen should be made early in the show, and not when the sunburn has already said. Other defenses include the ouster of the sun during the hottest hours of the day (between 12 and 16 hours), wearing a hat, a T-shirt, pants, cloth a pair of glasses, and never have children or baby, the sun!
